Wesley vs St. Peter’s at Havelock SC on 21st March:
The Blockbuster fixture of the weekend kicks off at Havies on Saturday evening, which should be quite close to a semi-final clash. The Double Blues will take the field as firm favourites based on their unwavering and crisp performance at the pre-quarter final game, whereas the Brigade stuttered and showed signs of weaknesses that can be rekindled on demand. Nevertheless, some shortcomings are usually fixed within a week, thus we could hope to witness an intense game that balances on the Tightrope.
Remember that the pre-QF games of these two teams were one-sided, with Mahanama putting up a slightly better defence effort against Wesley, who still scored 77.

While the offenses rate was comparable, Brigade’s ball handling was substandard in their inaugural official outing, and is highly likely to continue owing to Wesley’s nature of defending. Wesley has mastered the art of turning over at the Lineouts, pulling off 3 turnovers last week, whereas Peter’s have seldom in recent years, including last week. This means that SPC is unlikely to score Tries off Mauls in this game.

The Brigade has excelled in Place Kicking from acute angles, hence won’t be hesitant in taking penalty kicks from anywhere. However, Wesley has conceded only 5 penalties in their own half, as their tactic is to play inside the opposition’s grid, which is facilitated by their accurate and reliable long-distance Touch Kicking during open play. The above stats also indicate SPC’s high vulnerability in conceding penalties while playing inside their own half, which can be encashed for points by means of any of the following.
- Penalty points that could yield 20+ points – As Wesley achieved 100% kicking accuracy last week
- Find touch inside SPC’s 22 and work the Maul – Wesley scored 2 Tries off Mauls last week
- Drive the Maul close to the Tryline, and then either Pick & Drive or work the Backline
- Call for a Scrum if already inside SPC’s 22, and work the line
The Peterites’ only chance to win this game is to maintain possession of the ball without committing infringements that would cause them to lose possession. This would be a paramount task considering previous week’s stats, but unfortunately there seems to be no other way. This means no kicking, no offenses and no Knock-ons.
Isipathana vs St. Joseph’s at Royal Sports Complex on 22nd March:
Although the Green Machine is yet to showcase its “A Game”, we shall base this forecast on their last performance. They have shown signs of turnover capabilities, but only when they need it, and at crucial vantage points, and shall use it to counterattack. Joes’ defence is quite effective against oppositions’ Backline, and therefore Pathana will face their real test in this encounter, and may be forced to unleash their concealed tricks of the trade. Joes shall be conservative with their offenses, but the Greens will make the most of every offense committed inside Joes’ half using their refined Touch Kicking skills as shown below. Joes would be also well equipped to return the favour as per the odds below, hence we might get to see the true Maul defending skills of Pathana in this game.

While Pathana is destined to benefit maximum out of Joes’ mistakes, the latter could try their luck by testing the former using their Maul power, and pressurise the Greens to commit offenses while defending it. This appears to be one feasible method for them to score a few extra Tries, as using their Backline against the Pathana defence cannot guarantee much.
Conclusion
Kingswood exposed Joes’ inability to defend Pick and Drives last weekend by scoring two consecutive Tries, one all the way from outside Joes’ 22. Isipathana should be able to do this all day if required, and therefore unless Joes sharpen their technique in defending Pick and Drives adequately, we could expect a rather easy win for the Greens.
Royal vs S. Thomas’ at Havelock SC on 22nd March:
Although this won’t be a Trophy match, it would consist of all the excitement and rivalry of an India-Pakistan Cricket match, especially because the RoyTho Cricket encounter ended in a lethargic draw, hence the expectation of the two fraternities would be to crown a winner.
As concluded in our last week’s match review, the Royal Tuskers are ready to take on any team in any Tournament on the first week of the season itself, but this looks far-fetched for the Thomians, based on their performance last weekend. Regardless of the comparison of stats, the Thomians don’t look the part that could match up to the finesse of the Royal Tuskers. If the Thomians could manage to muster a show that is not beneath what they showcased in the last 20 minutes against Sri Sumangala, then we can expect a close match; if not, it is more likely to be a one-sided affair.
The one thing that remains favourable to the Thomians is their game discipline.

The last stat could get the Thomians pretty close to Royal’s Tryline with ball in hand, but what they could effectively accomplish from there onwards against the solid defence of the Tuskers is yet unknown. They could try one of the following.
- Simply kick to Goal, assuming 10 slotted penalties would fetch 30 points
- Kick to touch and either drive the Maul, or work the line
- Finish the above attacks with Pick and Drives
Pick & Drives and working the line may not return fruitful results initially when the energy levels are high, but they have a higher chance of working in the last 20 minutes. This is because the Tuskers have mastered a sound defence system against ground attacks by both the opposition Backs and Forwards, that is inherently designed to choke the oppositions with spontaneous rush defence and swift drift defence. Arial attacks are not yet tested against them, but could be too premature for teams to have mastered the art of timing and spacing Crosskicks, Short Punts or Drop Goals. If the Thomians have commenced training on these already, then they have another option to work with, but without any guarantees whatsoever.
While Royal possesses multiple methods of attacking and creating opportunities, they shall be delighted to find the Thomians being susceptible when it comes to defending Pick & Drives, which would ideally suit the finishing of their onslaughts.
Trinity vs Zahira at Sugathadasa Stadium on 22nd March:
The two teams met at the semi-final last year with Zahira almost stealing the game away from Trinity. It was revealed last week that Trinity still suffers from the same insecurity issues as last year, when provoked. Although Zahira has lifted up their game considerably, they cannot win this game, if they are unable to control their offenses.
Skills Assessment

Regardless of what the stats indicate, both teams are unlikely to spend time on improving their discipline at this stage. Although Trinity would be better capable of defending the onslaughts coming their way owing to their own blemishes, Zahira would be in a better position to capitalise on Trinity’s reduced defenders, and shall be ready with premeditated drills to take advantage of those opportunities. Zahira also possesses the skills and radiating vibes to induce trauma and panic in the oppositions’ camps using their aggressive attacks, that should assist them in accelerating handling and decision-making errors in the Trinity Camp.

While crooked throws are throws directed at own teammates, lost lineouts are due to misdirecting throws onto the opposition players, and are not categorised as turnovers in this column. When it comes to retaining lineouts, Zahira’s hooking skills are much superior to Trinity’s.

Trinity not only possesses fine turnover skills, but they are also well versed in using them to counterattack quite effectively. When Ruck and Lineout turnovers occur, the attacking teams are usually not in a mindset or formation to defend effectively, therefore quick and persistent counterattacks become almost unstoppable.

Static play Touch Kicks are executed following penalties and Free Kicks. Although Trinity is yet to find its first 50-22, the above stats serve as an indication to the massive territory they would gain if given a chance to kick, and therefore if Zahira is planning on kicking into the hands of their opposition, like at the last Knockouts, then they should think again.
Conclusion
Trinity’s exquisite expertise in Maul attacks is common knowledge. Zahira conceded 2 Maul Tries while also collapsing them 5 times in their previous game, which means that they are not ready to defend Mauls at this time. Zahira’s high penalty count combined with Trinity’s touch kicking abilities shall place the latter at ideal points to attack with Mauls, and then complete them with Pick and Drives if necessary. So, unless Zahira could drastically curtail their offenses, and learn to effectively defend Mauls without collapsing them, they have no chance in this encounter.
